The People of God In Matthew
The people of God is a huge theme in Matthew’s Gospel. This includes a number of interconnected topics:
- The winnowing of the old Israel—wheat vs. chaff
- The formation of the new Israel, including Jews and Gentiles
- The 12 as the nucleus of the new Israel
- The church of the Messiah
- The kingdom of God in its corporate dimension
- The community of those who confess Jesus as the Messiah
- The “little ones” who believe in the Messiah
- The family of God
- Relationships within the community of the Messiah
